How We Image God in Marriage

Isn’t it mind blowing to think about what God says of mankind (male and female), that we are made in God’s image! We bear a likeness to Him. He has imprinted us with aspects of Himself and each one of us, although billions, are each unique. He never repeats even one of us.

There are so many amazing parts of this concept but one of these really speaks to me. It is the idea that God made us relational.  He not only designed and created us to be in relationship with Him, but with each other. When Adam was in the garden, before Eve was created, he was in a perfect place without sin, and in relationship with God. Adam was given a job, role, responsibilities and the very presence of God himself. Yet, God says in Genesis 2:18, “It is not good that man is alone.” Again, he wasn’t totally alone and he had the animals. But, God said, “I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Genesis 2:18 (NKJV) God created Eve and brought her to Adam. He created someone to be in a relationship with Adam. God designed us to need each other. We need relationships. This was part of the original plan.

I think how incredible it is that Eve was like Adam in many ways, but oh so different in so many other ways. God did not make another Adam. He made Eve. She is different from him, she compliments him, she images different aspects of God. She brings new dimensions of thoughts, feelings, and intimacy to their relationship. The fact that God designed this union is beyond incredible.

This is why our marriages matter. They matter because as a man and women together in marriage we image God in a unique mysterious way. It may be beyond our capacity to really grasp what God is doing when He says that a man and women become one. They bind together in a way that reflects beautiful aspects of God’s image that are opposite and yet complete and complimenting. This should give us pause to think, “How does my marriage image God?” What do others see that might reflect an aspect of God?

I have to admit that many days or probably much longer times I don’t think about how or what my marriage is an image of. I don’t remind myself that God is all about relationships. He is all about my relationship with Him and He is all about my relationship with my husband. God is always working through my relationship with Him, and others (especially my husband). God is delighted when I enjoy my relationship with Him and with the one He has given me to be in human relationship with. May God teach us more and more about what it means when we live and love in our marriages in a way that honors His image.
