Embrace the Marriage Moments

Mother’s Day was last Sunday. It always brings a host of emotions for me. I am blessed to still have my mom here to love and celebrate. I am blessed to have been the mom of three boys. I also know the heartache of having two of my sons born with congenital heart defects and then the journey of grief in one of their deaths.

Today for some reason I thought about when our children are young, and we pick them up all the time. But we never know when we will pick them up for the last time. That moment is not announced or planned. It just happens. You realize at some point, usually much further down the road that somewhere, someplace you picked them up for the last time.

I can’t remember when the last time was that I picked up any of the three of my boys. I wish I could. It was a sober reminder to me that the moments pass quickly, the seasons are short.

“Teach us to number our days that we get a heart of wisdom.”

(Psalm 90:12, ESV)

In thinking about my marriage, I know the days tick away and I don’t know the length of our married life (I hope really long…) but I have no guarantee of that. I don’t know when the last time I say, “I love you!” will be. I don’t know when I might have my last kiss. I don’t know when I might have my last milestone moment in my marriage. None of us do.

Maybe we need to remember that moments don’t announce themselves they just are. Let’s ask God for eyes and hearts to see and savor the moments he has given us. To embrace them because we never know what that moment might end up representing. Maybe it will be a lasting one of significance that we remember forever, or maybe it will be a marker moment for our marriage. Maybe it will be one that just slips away unnoticed but one way or the other, the moment will become part of our journey. The moments are ultimately what will matter.

Keep Forging,
